Dorothy Jean Weaver The Irony of Power

This volume engages the Gospel of Matthew in full awareness of its inherently political character. Weaver situates Matthew's version of the «good news of the kingdom» squarely within the «real world» of first-century Palestine and its occupying power, the Roman Empire. The essays here focus prominently and collectively on the issues of power and violence that not only pervade the historically occupied Jewish community of first-century Palestine, but also are clearly visible throughout Matthew's narrative account. A «lower-level» reading of the Matthean text offers a bleak portrait of the overwhelming power and violence exerted by the Roman occupying authorities and their upper-echelon Jewish collaborators against the wider Jewish community of first-century Palestine. But an «upper-level»/"God's-eye" reading of Matthew's narrative consistently reveals the fundamental irony at the heart of the New Testament as a whole, of the Jesus story broadly conceived, and of Matthew's narrative account in specific. This irony overturns all humanly recognized definitions of «power» and demonstrates the astonishing «politics of God,» which defeats evident power through apparent powerlessness and overcomes violence through nonviolent initiatives.

Mikhail Epstein The Irony of the Ideal

Группа авторов Ironic Life

Just as philosophy begins with doubt, so also a life that may be called human begins with irony so wrote Kierkegaard. While we commonly think of irony as a figure of speech where someone says one thing and means the opposite, the concept of irony has long played a more fundamental role in the tradition of philosophy, a role that goes back to Socrates Ð the originator and exemplar of the urbane ironic life. But what precisely is Socratic irony and what relevance, if any, does it have for us today? Bernstein begins his inquiry with a critical examination of the work of two contemporary philosophers for whom irony is vital: Jonathan Lear and Richard Rorty. Despite their sharp differences, Bernstein argues that they complement one other, each exploring different aspects of ironic life. In the background of Lear’s and Rorty’s accounts stand the two great ironists: Socrates and Kierkegaard. Focusing on the competing interpretations of Socratic irony by Gregory Vlastos and Alexander Nehamas, Bernstein shows how they further develop our understanding of irony as a form of life and as an art of living. Bernstein also develops a distinctive interpretation of Kierkegaard’s famous claim that a life that may be called human begins with irony. Bernstein weaves together the insights of these thinkers to show how each contributes to a richer understanding of ironic life. He also argues that the emphasis on irony helps to restore the balance between two different philosophical traditions philosophy as a theoretical discipline concerned with getting things right and philosophy as a practical discipline that shapes how we ought to live our lives.

David Lloyd Circle

David Lloyd's verses are a genuine contribution to the literature of haiku. They capture an image, a moment in time, and engrave it in the memory for all time. This is the mark of good haiku, as indeed it is of good verse in general. His haiku can excite the senses, as in:See the sharp needlesforever sewing the skyTo the pine branches.Free of irony, except the irony of nature which sets the tone, calls the shots, with a not always recognizable impartiality, their perceptions are too clear for comment:Flowing downstreamBetween the mountain pines,A bird's embryo.Dogwood blossoms,Their edges turning brown,Recalling legends.Poetic magic raised to a higher power by the author's pen and ink vignettes, complementing each verse. Eye pleasing and evocative, these sketches open little doors to experience.

Dorothy Thompson The Dignity of Chartism

Groundbreaking studies of Britain’s first major working-class movement This is the first collection of essays on Chartism by leading social historian Dorothy Thompson, whose work radically transformed the way in which Chartism is understood. Reclaiming Chartism as a fully-blown working-class movement, Thompson intertwines her penetrating analyses of class with ground-breaking research uncovering the role played by women in the movement. Throughout her essays, Thompson strikes a delicate balance between down-to-the-ground accounts of local uprisings, snappy portraits of high-profile Chartist figures as well as rank-and-file men and women, and more theoretical, polemical interventions. Of particular historical and political significance is the previously unpublished substantial essay co-authored by Dorothy and Edward Thompson, a superb piece of local historical research by two social historians then on the brink of notable careers. With contributions by E. P. Thompson
