Arthur Machen The Great God Pan

Arthur Machen The Great God Pan

Arthur Machen (3 March 1863 – 15 December 1947) was the pen-name of Arthur Llewellyn Jones, a Welsh author and mystic of the 1890s and early 20th century. He is best known for his influential supernatural, fantasy, and horror fiction. His novella The Great God Pan has garnered a reputation as a classic of horror, with Stephen King describing it as «Maybe the best [horror story] in the English language.» The Great God Pan is a horror and fantasy novella by Welsh writer Arthur Machen. Machen was inspired to write The Great God Pan by his experiences at the ruins of a pagan temple in Wales. What would become the first chapter of the novella was published in the magazine The Whirlwind in 1890. Machen later extended The Great God Pan and it was published as a book alongside another story, «The Inmost Light», in 1894. The novella begins with an experiment to allow a woman named Mary to see the supernatural world. This is followed by an account of a series of mysterious happenings and deaths over many years surrounding a woman named Helen Vaughan. At the end, the heroes confront Helen and force her to kill herself. She undergoes a series of supernatural transformations before dying and she is revealed to be the child of Mary and the god Pan. On publication, it was widely denounced by the press as degenerate and horrific because of its implied sexual content, and the novella hurt Machen's reputation as an author. Beginning in the 1920s, Machen's work was critically re-evaluated and The Great God Pan has since garnered a reputation as a classic of horror. Literary critics have noted the influence of other nineteenth-century authors on The Great God Pan and offered differing opinions on whether or not it can be considered an example of Gothic fiction or science fiction. The novella has influenced the work of horror writers such as Bram Stoker, H. P. Lovecraft, and Stephen King, and has been adapted for the stage twice. Among the most significant works Arthur Machen: The Bowmen, The Great God Pan, The Three Impostors, The Hill of Dreams, The White People, The Green Round, and many more.

Machen Arthur The Great God Pan - The Original Classic Edition

I came to know about Arthur Machen and his work through the brilliant mastermind of H.P.Lovecraft; his references, both in fiction (The Dunwich Horror makes a very clear statement about Machens influence in his body of work) and non-fiction (Supernatural Horror in Literature), ultimately inspired me to go search something about this author. Needless to say, I found virtually nothing in any bookstore. It was during a trip to Madrid, Spain, where I finally found a book by Machen containing The Great God Pan and many others. I was shocked.
The Great God Pan was the first story I read by Arthur Machen, and I only had to read the first few pages to know I was going to like it. Indeed, I did, although it was a little short for my taste.
The ideas Machen makes you travel through are some of the finest in horror literature, and the Cosmic view of Pan, is very near the likes of Lovecraft. One can easily see where the influence Machen exerted over Lovecraft is. The only difference is that Machen did believe in some supernatural force existing within the Universe, whereas Lovecraft was the complete opposite.
Dark Pagan Horror is what Machen delivers, and he does so with such a style, elegance and wit, you just cant help but to stay with it until you are done.

Arthur Machen The Great God Pan, The White People, and Other Stories

“The Great God Pan, The White People, and Other Stories” is a collection of nineteen short stories and novellas by Arthur Machen. The Welsh author, journalist, actor, and mystic, was well-known for his early influential horror and supernatural fantasy tales published in the late 19th and early 20th century. Included in this collection are some of his most enduring and famous works, such as the novella “The Great God Pan”, first published in 1890. Considered one of the best horror stories in English literature, the tale of Helen Vaughn and the mystery and violence that surrounded her life was met with much controversy and acclaim when it first appeared for its taboo subject matter and suggestive imagery. Also included are such classics as “The Bowmen”, his 1914 tale of ghosts helping British soldiers at the Battle of Mons that was widely believed by many at the time to be a true story of otherworldly intervention. Machen’s imaginative and spell-binding tales continue to entertain and inspire generations of readers and writers who enjoy well-crafted tales of suspense and supernatural fantasy. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Arthur Machen Three Imposters and Other Stories

Arthur Machen (1863-1947), popular Welsh writer of the bizarre and fantastic, created some of the finest horror stories ever written. He produced works that would later have a profound influence on science fiction author H. P. Lovecraft, and the contemporary horror genre as a whole. This novel contains what are considered to be Machen's best works, written as a set of interwoven tales that shocked his Victorian contemporaries with their risqué subject matter and wonderfully eerie descriptions. The collection includes Machen's first major success «The Great God Pan,» «The Inmost Light,» «Shining Pyramid,» and «Three Imposters.» Set in the bleak and seedy London alleyways, Machen elevates the stories to eerily familiar heights, leaving many of the most disturbing and elusive details up to the reader's imagination. Horror fans especially will enjoy these classic tales of the mysterious and the macabre.
